Blackheads are one of the most common types of mild acne, formed when a pore becomes clogged with excess oil, dead skin cells, and dirt. Unlike whiteheads, the top of the clogged pore stays open, allowing the trapped material to oxidize when exposed to air. This oxidation is what gives blackheads their dark, dot-like appearance on the skin.
They often appear on areas where the skin produces more oil, such as the nose, forehead, chin, back, and even the ears. Factors like hormonal changes, sweating, oily skin, or not cleansing properly can make blackheads form more easily. Wearing heavy makeup or skincare products that clog pores can also contribute to buildup.
Treating blackheads usually involves gently cleansing the skin to remove excess oil and exfoliating to clear away dead skin cells. Products with salicylic acid are especially effective because they penetrate the pores and help dissolve the buildup inside. Clay masks, retinoids, and pore-cleansing strips can also help, but they should be used carefully to avoid irritation.
