Ear pimples are surprisingly common and can appear on the outer ear, ear canal entrance, or behind the ear. They form when pores get clogged with oil, dead skin, or bacteria—just like pimples on the face.Ear skin has oil glands, and when these get blocked, a pimple forms. Things like dirty earbuds, headphones, phones, or touching your ears with unwashed hands can introduce bacteria. Sweat, long hair, or heavy earwax buildup can also contribute.
They often feel tender, sore, or itchy. Some may grow into painful bumps, especially in tight areas like the ear canal. If squeezed, they can become more inflamed or infected.
Gently clean the area with warm water and mild soap. Warm compresses help reduce swelling and allow the pimple to drain naturally. Avoid picking or squeezing them. For prevention, clean headphones and earbuds regularly, keep your hair and hands clean, and avoid inserting anything deep into your ears. If a pimple is very swollen, painful, or lasts many days, a dermatologist can help safely treat it.
