BODY ACNE: Causes, Prevention & Treatment

Body acne happens when pores on areas like the back, chest, shoulders, and arms get clogged with oil, sweat, and dead skin cells. It’s often triggered by excess sweating, tight clothing, friction (backpacks, gym gear), hormonal changes, and using heavy or oily skincare products. Unlike face acne, body acne tends to be deeper and more stubborn because the skin is thicker.

To manage body acne, shower soon after sweating and use a gentle salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide body wash. Avoid tight, non-breathable clothes and choose cotton or moisture-wicking fabrics. Don’t scrub too hard—harsh exfoliation can irritate the skin and make breakouts worse.

If body acne is severe or leaves dark marks or scars, a dermatologist can help with stronger treatments like topical retinoids, antibiotics, or other targeted therapies. With consistent care, body acne can be controlled and significantly reduced.
